Wood Duck Calls (Learn their 2 sounds)

Wood Ducks are fascinating and beautiful. They can even captivate the non-birder with the male’s beautiful feathering and the female’s gracefulness.

Wood Ducks like to live in wooded swamps, but that’s not how they got their name. That comes from their ability to roost in trees and their preference to nest in tree cavities.  So keep your eyes on the trees next time you near a wooded swamp, as you might just spot the Wood Duck.

  • Make sure to press PLAY on the audio files below. 🙂

Sound #1: ‘oo-eek oo-eek’

Male and female Wood Ducks make two different calls, and neither one of them is a  quack. In this clip, you will hear the female calling as she flies over and lands in the water. It sounds like ‘oo-eek oo-eek‘. She may make this call more urgent sounding if she feels threatened or has ducklings and a predator is nearby.

Sound #2: Zeeting Whistle

Amongst the splashing in this clip, you can hear what sounds like a kazoo calling, that would be the male Wood Duck call. Males will use this zeeting whistle to attract mates but also to show competition with other males in the area.

Sound #3: Wood Duck Flock

If I was in a wooded area alone and heard this, I might just turn around. But have no fear, as this is just a flock of Wood Ducks communicating with each other. Listening closely, you can hear the ‘oo-eeks‘ of the female Wood Duck call and the ‘zeeting‘ whistle of the male Wood Duck call.

If it sounds like monkeys, it’s probably a female Wood Duck call. If it sounds like odd kazoos, think male Wood Duck call.
