Sound #1: ‘Klee’
Lasting 3-6 seconds, this call sounds like they are calling ‘klee‘ over and over. Some people also hear ‘king‘. I personally just hear a bird laughing and listen for that when I am birding. Whichever you sound you hear, when heard be sure to look up because the American Kestrel is nearby.
Sound #2: Chitter
This American Kestrel call is considered a friendly interaction between two kestrels. Known as ‘chitter‘ it can be quite fast as these falcons always sound very excited in their calls.
American Kestrels also use a long whine call that can last up to 2 minutes. This call is typically only used during courting seasons.
